There are twenty-six letters in the alphabet however there are over forty-four phonemes and even more graphemes that are used to represent these phonemes.
During the early years or formal education (up to UK Year Two especially) children are expected to recognise, recall and use these phonemes and graphemes during phonic sessions in their reading and writing to be able to grasp the English language and
develop their learning.
We have developed a list of phonemes, their international phonetic symbol (for adult reference), their equivalent graphemes and some examples for your reference. For Montessori practitioners, we have also colour coded the graphemes.
